About the map

Why HarvestMap exists

Finding a good u-pick farm shouldn't require four tabs, three forums, and a guess. HarvestMap brings the farms to one place, organized by what's actually in season.

Who runs it

HarvestMap is built and maintained by Chester Beard through Salish Sea Consulting. It started as a simple idea — a directory that answers one question well: "who is harvesting what, near me, right now?" — and grew into a national map of small farms, orchards, farm stands, and farmers markets.

Where the data comes from

Our listings are drawn from a few careful sources, and we try to be honest about which is which:

  • USDA Local Food Portal — a public directory of farms, markets, and food businesses across the country.
  • PickYourOwn.org — a long-running community resource for u-pick farms and orchards.
  • Grower submissions — farms that list themselves or send us a "what's ripe" update directly.

A farm that came from a public directory may not have photos or detailed seasonality yet. We mark those listings honestly so you know what's been verified and what hasn't.

How we review listings

Every grower submission is reviewed by a real person before it goes live — usually within 48 hours. We check the basic facts, clean up anything confusing, and follow up by email if we have questions. This is deliberate: no self-serve dashboard, no instant anonymous edits. A little friction keeps the directory trustworthy.

A word on accuracy

Farms change their hours, their crops, and their minds. Seasonal availability on HarvestMap is estimated from growing zones and crop calendars — it is not a promise from the farm. Always call ahead before you drive out, especially during shoulder seasons.
